The theoretical struggle is a key component of the class struggle. Without revolutionary theory there can be no revolutionary movement. Capitalism is facing the deepest crisis in its history. The ruling class can offer no real way forward for the vast majority of people.
The In Defence of Marxism magazine – produced by the International Marxist Tendency – is a tool and a weapon for revolutionary class fighters all over the world, offering serious Marxist analysis on theoretical questions and burning issues of the labour movement.
We must answer the dominant ideas of the bourgeois and the reformists, and cut through the distortions about the ideas of Marxism. The aim of this magazine is to allow our supporters – especially those new to Marxism – to do this.
The Summer 2023 issue of In Defence of Marxism deals with the question of the Marxism and the state.

The featured article in this issue deals with the phenomena of Bonapartism, used to describe a process whereby the state acquires a degree of independence from the classes in society. Using this analogy, we can shed light on the nature of many regimes, from Napoleon Bonaparte, to Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
In Alan Woods’ article ‘The Class Struggle in the Roman Republic’, Alan deals with the question of why the Roman Republic went into crisis, and how Caesarism – a process similar to Bonapartism – was able to emerge.
In other articles, Joel Bergman offers a critique of David Graeber’s book The Dawn of Everything, and Ben Curry reviews the work of Honoré de Balzac – one of Marx and Engels’ favourite writers.
Please note: We only deliver print editions of the magazine to UK residents. Non-UK residents should head to the In Defence of Marxism website.
